چکیده

In this paper we present an analysis of information transfer based on Landauer s principle (i.e., erasure of information is associated with an increase in entropy), as well as considerations of analyticity and causality. We demonstrate that holomorphic functions allowing complete analytic continuation cannot propagate any information, such that information transfer only occurs with analytic functions having points of non-analyticity (i.e., meromorphic functions). Such points of non-analyticity (or discontinuities) are incompatible with adiabaticity, so that information transfer must always be accompanied by a change in entropy: a dynamic reformulation of Landauer s Principle. In addition, since Brillouin proved that discontinuities cannot travel faster than the speed of light c, this also implies that information cannot be transferred at superluminal speeds. 2003 Elsevier B.V. The physics of forgetting: Landauer’s erasure principle and information theory

This article discusses the concept of information and its intimate relationship with physics. After an introduction of all the necessary quantum mechanical and information theoretical concepts we analyse Landauer’ s principle which states that the erasure of information is inevitably accompanied by the generation of heat. We employ this principle to rederive a number of results in classical and...

On Landauer principle and bound for infinite systems

Landauer principle provides a link between Shannon information entropy and Clausius thermodynamical entropy. We set up here a basic formula for the incremental free energy of a quantum channel, possibly relative to infinite systems, naturally arising by an Operator Algebraic point of view. By the Tomita-Takesaki modular theory, we can indeed describe a canonical evolution associated with a quan...

A note on the Landauer principle in quantum statistical mechanics

The Landauer principle asserts that the energy cost of erasure of one bit of information by the action of a thermal reservoir in equilibrium at temperature T is never less than kBT log 2. We discuss Landauer’s principle for quantum statistical models describing a finite level quantum system S coupled to an infinitely extended thermal reservoirR. Using Araki’s perturbation theory of KMS states a...

EXORCIST XIV : The Wrath of Maxwell ’ s Demon . Part II . From Szilard to Landauer and Beyond

In this second part of our two-part paper we review and analyse attempts since 1950 to use information theoretic notions to exorcise Maxwell’s Demon. We argue through a simple dilemma that these attempted exorcisms are ineffective, whether they follow Szilard in seeking a compensating entropy cost in information acquisition or Landauer in seeking that cost in memory erasure. In so far as the De...

The Hot Bit I: The Szilard-Landauer Correspondence

We present a precise formulation of a correspondence between information and thermodynamics that was first observed by Szilard, and later studied by Landauer. The correspondence identifies available free energy with relative entropy, and provides a dictionary between information and thermodynamics. We precisely state and prove this correspondence. The paper should be broadly accessible since we...
